The Cabinet of Curiosities group show will open at Beinart Gallery on Saturday, January 31.
I am participating in the exhibition with a sculptural work.
The term Cabinet of Curiosities refers to private collections that began among European nobility in the Middle Ages—spaces where rare, strange, and not fully understood objects from around the world were gathered.
It is often considered one of the origins of modern museums.
In reality, these cabinets were said to be quite chaotic and eclectic, filled with a wide variety of objects without clear order.
Inspired by this concept, Beinart Gallery is presenting this group exhibition.

I have contributed a new sculpture for the show.
For this piece, I created a girl wearing a lace dress, with a cabinet forming her head.

The cabinet itself was handmade.

Among the lace, I incorporated some of my favorite antique lace pieces that I found at flea markets, mixed together with newer lace.

On the left side of the cabinet, there is a bottle filled with micro skulls and flowers.
(It is a bit difficult to see in photos due to reflections.)

A brass handle is attached to the top of the head.
On the right side is a shelf of skulls.
No matter how many skulls I make, I never seem to tire of them.

This series featuring figures with abnormal or altered heads has become very important to me.This piece is one of my personal favorites among my recent works.
For this exhibition, Beinart Gallery will also be showing one of my earlier works, Collector.

This piece was created around the theme of “collecting.”
I myself am a collector of many things, and for collectors, the act of collecting can be life itself—sometimes a source of light and hope.
That feeling is embedded in the work.
In Asia and Japan, there is a long-held belief that destined people are connected by an invisible red thread. She holds and wears this red thread.
I have also embedded meanings into buttons and other small elements, but rather than explaining everything, I hope viewers will sense and interpret these details in their own way.
